In my church, I am a leader for all of the girls that are 12-17 years old. The girls are encouraged to participate in a Personal Progress program. At the end of every year we have a night called “Young Women in Excellence” where we get to celebrate the accomplishments of the girls throughout the year. I had the opportunity to plan it this year along with another leader. It was a lot of fun but a lot of work! Every year the young women’s program has a theme. This year the theme was to serve God with all your heart, might, mind and strength. We were searching for fun ideas and decided to do a Wizard of Oz theme because each of the four main characters stood for heart (tin man), might (lion), mind (scarecrow), and strength (Dorothy). This theme was so much fun to work with! There are so many great things you can do with it.
We used red (ruby slippers) and blue gingham (Dorothy’s dress) throughout the entire room. We used yellow poster board for the yellow brick road. To make the brick lines, we used a large sharpie and then taped it to the floor with clear packaging tape. For the red banner, we cut triangles from red poster board and hot glued them to white ribbon.
The food was a lot of fun! We had “yellow brick road rice krispie treats”, “no place like homemade cupcakes”, “over the rainbow fruit salad”, and “Emerald City green punch”. I made food tags for each treat. You can find the free printable HERE (with words). You can find a blank printable HERE.
We put the gifts bags and ruby slippers on the front table. For the gift, we got each girl a ruby necklace and two cards that went with the theme.
The leader I worked with actually had a friend whose family was just the Wizard of Oz characters for Halloween. Perfect timing! They let us borrow these awesome props including the dress and shoes shown in the previous photos.
We put the girl’s presentations in the back of the room. The colored tablecloths stand for each of our young women value colors. Faith (white), divine nature (blue), individual worth (red), knowledge (green), choice and accountability (orange), good works (yellow), integrity (purple) and virtue (gold). You can learn more about the values and Personal Progress program HERE.
Here are the programs that I created. The font I used for the food tags and program was American Typewriter Condensed Light. You can find the free program printable HERE.
Again, here are the free food tag printables.

I hope that this post helps anyone else who is doing a Wizard of Oz theme! It was a lot of fun and the girls and other leaders loved it!
Sincerely,

I had to chuckle when I saw this linked to Wow Us Wednesday because I have never seen a YW in Excellence at a blog party before. So cool! This looks like it was well-planned and I love the Wizard of Oz analogy. Great job! My girls just had their special night a couple weeks ago. They each got to spotlight a fellow YW. It was fun! Following you on Pinterest. 🙂
