My natural hair color is brunette but when I was 16, I became a lifeguard for the summer and my hair got really blonde. Ever since then I have gone back and forth as a blonde (getting highlights) and back to a brunette. I went back brunette for the first time my freshman year in college, so early 2007. I stuck with the brunette for about a year and a half and then I got my blonde highlights again in the summer of 2008. I was a blonde until soon after I graduated college (late 2010) and then I dyed it back brown. This time I was only brunette for about 6 months before going blonde again. This was right before I met my husband so he had never seen me as a brunette until now!
I just dyed it back brown a few weeks ago. The previous two times that I dyed it brown I got it done professionally. This time I decided to try to do it myself to save some money! I was a little nervous but I figured that if I really messed it up then I could always go get it fix by a professional.
When I change my hair color, there is no gradual change! I am either all in or all out. Whenever I go back brunette, I have to admit I love the shock factor from people!
So disclosure, I am not a professional hairdresser! I just wanted to share how I went from blonde to brunette by myself. It really wasn’t too hard and I really liked the way it turned out!
Step 1: You actually have to dye your blonde hair red first! If you don’t then you risk the chance of turning your hair green because brown hair needs a red base. You can use a red or auburn box hair color. I used Clairol Natural Instincts, Medium Auburn. You can find it on Amazon HERE but I got mine at Walmart for about $7. I only had to use one box because the bottom of my hair was my natural brown color already. Here is a picture of me as a red head….um I don’t think this is my best color lol but I got to look like the little mermaid for about 30 minutes! I followed the instructions on the box and then a blow dried my hair.
Step 2: Now it is time to cover the red with brown. I originally went with a lighter brown but quickly realized that is was not dark enough and kind of turned my hair a purple color. I had to go back to the store (yes, with purple hair) and exchange the box color for a darker brown which ended up working out great. I used Clairol Natural Instincts, Dark Brown. You can find it on Amazon HERE but again, I got mine a Walmart for about $7 per box. Follow the directions on the box. I used 2 boxes because I have pretty long hair. Make sure you plan ahead and buy the correct amount of boxes for your hair! You don’t want to not have enough to cover your entire head or else you will have to process it twice.
I am really happy with how it turned out! Back to the dark side!
Sincerely,
shari jean
