My daughter’s first birthday was a few weeks ago and it was such a special day! In the morning, we took her to the Springs Preserve in Vegas where she got to go to a butterfly habitat and many other exhibits. In the evening, we had our family come over for her birthday party. Unfortunately, she cried through the ENTIRE party. I also attempted to make her a smash cake that failed but luckily I had two cakes for the guests. I used one of those cakes for her so she got an entire cake to smash but she didn’t want anything to do with it and cried. We also did a pinata and opened presents which she continued to cried through. Even though she cried the whole time it was still fun and we made a lot of fun memories!
Pink and gold were the main colors for the party. I had pink and gold tulle pom poms, balloons, happy birthday sign, high chair cover, and other decorations. I made a “1” out of foam board and covered it with pictures from her first year. I also made a collage of her monthly photos during the year (months 1-12) and framed it. It was so fun to make those photo projects because I got to look back at all of the fun memories that we have had with her. She has brought so much happiness and joy into our lives! What a blessing she is! I love her with all my heart! She is such a happy little girl and her laugh is my favorite sound in the world!
So let’s back up just a little bit. I started looking for an outfit for her birthday months in advance. I knew I wanted a big tutu. You only turn one once! Everything I found was pretty expensive, like $40-$50. I didn’t want to spend that much so I decided to make an outfit by myself. It only cost me about $10!
Here is my $10 DIY Girl First Birthday Tulle Outfit tutorial:
TUTU:
For a full step by step tutorial (with photos) on how to make the tutu, you can read my previous post HERE from when I made a tutu for my daughter’s newborn photos. I got 2 spools of tulle at Hobby Lobby for only $2.50 each. They are 50% off every other week so wait to buy it on sale.
ONESIE:
I didn’t want to have a onesie with sleeves. I just don’t like how it looks with the huge tutu. I wanted thin straps.
Supplies:
- Small white cami/spaghetti strap (I got mine from Forever 21 for only like $2.)
- Gold glitter iron on transfer sheet (I got mine at JoAnn’s. You can find it HERE for about $3.00 with your 40% off coupon.)
- Sewing Machine
- Fabric Shears
- Pins
- Iron
- Thin White Elastic
- Cardstock
- Ultra-Fine Point Black Sharpie
- Safety Pin
- 4 Strips of tulle (about 6″x 6″ each) I got my tulle at Hobby Lobby for only $2.50 per spool. They are 50% off every other week so wait to buy it on sale.
