5 Things to Know When Beginning Fertility Treatments

Hey Sistas,

Wanted to give an update on my (Tami)  fertility post that I wrote a few weeks ago.

Fertility_IVF_Insemination

This week I was in New York for work.  I was so exhausted yesterday as I requested an Uber to the airport.  Right before I left my hotel room to meet my driver, I realized that “Aunt Flow” had come to visit, which unfortunately meant that I’m still not pregnant.  My poor Uber driver had to make a stop at CVS so that I could run in and get a box of tampons because I had forgotten to pack some.  So, through bag check and security check I went, with a few tears rolling down my cheeks.  The people around me were probably wondering what was wrong with me lol.

Through the long plane ride I talked myself out of being sad. Through challenges, it is easy for the bad things to take control of your thoughts. Even if you have tons of good things happening in your life, it is easy for the bad things to become your central focus.  I am just grateful that there is modern medicine these days to help us have children, even if it is expensive, painful, and stressful.

We started our fertility journey a couple of weeks ago. We are still praying to get pregnant naturally, but our chances look slim. I have several tests happening this month, and then our doctor will consult us on what treatments he recommends for us.

Fertility_Appointment_Expectations

For anyone out there who is thinking that they need to schedule an appointment with a fertility doctor, here is what to expect:

  1. The male will need two tests: Semen analysis and Blood test
  2. The female will need several tests: Blood test, physical exam, vaginal cultures, pap smear, gyn ultrasound (for ovaries and/or uterus), sonohysterogram (for uterine cavity), and hysterosalpingogram (for fallopian tubes).
  3. All of these tests can happen in about one month’s time
  4. Your doctor will consult you on moving forward with treatments: artificial insemination (clomiphene medication or injectable medication) or IVF.
  5. Pricing for the actual fertility treatments is crazy expensive. Make sure you know exactly what your insurance covers! Artificial Insemination can cost $3k – $4k. IVF can cost $14k and above.

If you are experiencing anything sad right now, I encourage you to try to not let it take control of your thoughts, time, and mood. Keep yourself busy, listen to/read things that lift you up, and think positively! And I will leave you with this quote, “What looked hard, almost impossible under her own power, became a joy in the strength of the Lord.” – H.B. Eyring

Sincerely,

tami jean

I’m soooo sorry that you’re going through this.

I struggled with unexplained infertility for 3 and a half years.

It was the hardest thing. Every time I got my period, I couldn’t stop crying.

I never tried fertility treatments as I was scared it wouldn’t work and the money and my hope would be lost.

Then by some miracle I got pregnant. This sounds crazy and I can’t say that it was what helped, but my husband found out about Pre-Seed online which is a lubricant that’s safe to use while trying to get pregnant. I don’t know how it could have actually helped, but I got pregnant the first month we used it.

I also used it when we got pregnant with my second baby girl.

I hesitate to leave this comment because I don’t want to sound annoying and like I’m giving unsolicited advice.

But I just want to say that I’ve been there through the pain of infertility.

I’m so thankful for my two sweet girls and blessed that the timing of them coming into my life ended up being perfect.

Thanks for telling me what I should expect when going to a fertility doctor. I’m surprised by how many tests I would need to get to find out what kinds of treatments will work for me. I didn’t know that artificial insemination can cost $3k-$4k and IVF can cost more than $14k. I’ll keep that in mind to prepare myself for fertility treatments.

No problem! Every fertility clinic varies in pricing. Pricing differs from insurance to insurance. I actually called my insurance to see which clinic would be best in terms of “in network” pricing. But you also want to make sure you like your doctor 🙂
